Day ninety-nine

12 Mar 2019

The Gould returns:

It is pretty impressive to watch a ship like the Gould reverse into position along the pier. The first thing to happen is to secure the ship with ropes attached to massive pillars on shore. The ship’s ropes are thick and heavy, so smaller ropes are used to guide the larger ropes from the ship to the shore. This process of securing the ropes is done with the help of line handlers (volunteers on station) who work as a team.

The Gould will remain here until Thursday. Several members of the Palmer family are returning on this ship also. The next time the ship returns I will be on it and most others on station. That next ship is called the turnover boat - as we are exchanging with the winterovers.

Meanwhile, those leaving from station will enjoy a few more sunsets from here.
