Waste management - keeping Antarctica pristine:

Let me introduce you to Rob and Nándor who are ensuring that waste at Palmer Station is processed properly. Rob deals, as he stated to me, with the “tail end of science”. Any hazardous waste, such as from labwork (chemicals) or heavy machinery (e.g. oil, fuel), is collected and compartmentalized. This waste will eventually make it all the way back to California. However, it first travels from Palmer Station to McMurdo (also in Antarctica), so not via a direct route! This is thus likely the most traveled waste on this planet!

There is also lots of recycling on station. In fact, recycling comprises about 70% of the waste on station. The recycling is expertly handled by Nándor. The recycling is eventually shipped to Chile where it will be processed.

Thanks to the teamwork of these two, Palmer Station is contributing towards ensuring that tourists, scientists, and future generations can enjoy (or enjoy work in) a pristine region of Antarctica. Thanks Rob and Nándi!
